FAQ: What is a Sports Massage?

What Is A Sports Massage?

While a regular massage may aim for overall relaxation, a Sports Massage is more targeted. Sports Massage is used to help relieve tight muscles by enhancing circulation, increasing tissue elasticity and reducing muscle tension. It is a targeted approach in treating sports-related tension as well as acute and chronic injuries. It also aims to facilitate recovery and help you return to sports or pain-free activity.

Technique:

The technique used varies depending on the needs of the individual and their condition.

Your sports massage therapist may do one or a combination of the following:

  • Deep Tissue & Trigger Point Therapy – Uses firm pressure to reach deeper layers of the muscles, targeting specific areas of tightness or muscle pain to breaking down knots and relieve tension.

  • Stretching & Mobilisation – Includes assisted stretching, joint mobilisation, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching, as well as advice on stretches you can do yourself

  • Advice on Injury Prevention & Recovery – Advice on combining strengthening, stretching and rest (where needed) to help reduce muscle soreness, prevent injuries and speed up healing
